Is Google Assistant the same as Google Home?
The Google Assistant is a voice-controlled artificial intelligence not unlike Amazon’s Alexa. You can use the Google Assistant to carry out certain tasks in your home. These include playing music, setting timers and reminders, closing of blinds, controlling gadgets and appliances available within your home, etc.
Google Home, on the other hand, is a smart speaker that serves as a home for Google Assistant. In other words, Google Home is the embodiment of Google Assistant through which it speaks and is spoken to.
Simply put, Google Home is the hardware (which is the physical part) while Google Assistant is the software which enables you to remotely control your home.
The Google Assistant is present on both smartphones and smart speakers. There is a range of third-party smart speakers on which you can employ the services of Google Assistant. An example of a smartphone on which you can use Google Assistant is the Google Pixel 3. Third party smart speakers on which you can use Google Assistant includes Sonos One, TicHome Mini, JBL link series and so on.
Can you name your Google Home?
As stated, Google Home is a hardware device. And it is possible to change its name. The device is connectable via WiFi to a mobile device or tablet and can be thus changed. All that you need to do is launch your Google Home app on your device while it is connected. When open, navigate too settings, name, enter a new name and then save whatever name it is you want your Google home device to start going by.
However, you cannot change the name of your Google Assistant. This is because of how Google planned the personality of Assistant. They wanted an AI that is genderless and not too American. They wanted to create an Assistant that makes people feel like they are in charge. This is why they decided to go with the name “Assistant” as opposed to Amazon’s “Alexa”, Apple’s “Siri” and Microsoft’s “Cortana”.
